In 1916, Dr. Harry Wegeforth was driving near Balboa Park and heard the roar of a lion that was part of the Panama-California Exposition. He turned to his brother, Paul, and said, “Wouldn’t it be splendid if San Diego had a zoo! You know, I think I’ll start one!” That siren’s song was provided by Rex the lion.
From this special moment, San Diego became home to the world’s greatest zoo. As the world-famous San Diego Zoo enters its second century sharing the wonders of wildlife, Rex has returned to his rightful place—in a monumental way.
Be sure to wear this when you visit the 20,000 pound sculpture of Rex—reborn—that sits at the entrance to our World Famous San Diego Zoo.
