In 1916, Dr. Harry Wegeforth was driving near Balboa Park and heard the roar of a lion that was part of the Panama-California Exposition. He turned to his brother, Paul, and said, “Wouldn’t it be splendid if San Diego had a zoo! You know, I think I’ll start one!” That siren’s song was provided by Rex the lion.
Be sure to wear this when you visit the 20,000 pound sculpture of Rex—reborn—that sits at the entrance to our World Famous San Diego Zoo.
