In 1916, Dr. Harry Wegeforth was driving near Balboa Park and heard the roar of a lion that was part of the Panama-California Exposition. He turned to his brother, Paul, and said, “Wouldn’t it be splendid if San Diego had a zoo! You know, I think I’ll start one!” That siren’s song was provided by Rex the lion.
From this special moment, San Diego became home to the world’s greatest zoo. In its second century of sharing the wonders of wildlife, Rex has returned to his rightful place—in a monumental way.
This unique key ring features a miniature replica of the 20,000 pound sculpture of Rex thatsits at the entrance to our World Famous San Diego Zoo.
