The axolotl is part of the group of mole salamanders—which includes its closest relative, the tiger salamander Ambystoma tigrinum; and the more distant relative, the spotted salamander Ambystoma maculatum. See them in person in the Marsh Meadows habitat at the San Diego Zoo's Wildlife Explorers Basecamp. This one is about 15 inches long from nose to tail, with a sweet face.
